Brake Safety Week is not the time to discover an air leak, worn friction material, or an adjustment issue that should have been caught in the yard. During CVSA Brake Safety Week, held August 23–29, inspectors across North America place added attention on brake system condition, brake components, and overall vehicle compliance.

We Prepared Before the Trucks Left the Yard
Our Brake Safety Week preparation starts with the same question we ask before every haul: What could create a brake-related problem before this truck reaches the customer’s location?
We reviewed the trucks and trailers scheduled to move, the type of load each unit would carry, the expected routes, and the condition of key brake system components. Drivers and shop personnel checked air lines, brake chambers, slack adjusters, drums, rotors, linings, hoses, warning devices, and trailer connections before dispatch.
This preparation matters in oilfield and heavy-haul transportation because brake performance is directly tied to load weight, terrain, stopping distance, and overall control. A truck hauling heavy machinery or oilfield equipment needs a brake system that is properly maintained, correctly adjusted, and ready for real operating conditions.
Our team also reviewed documentation and communication procedures. Drivers knew what equipment they were assigned, what condition it was in, what issues had been corrected, and who to contact immediately if a brake concern showed up on the route.
Brake Components Were the Main Focus
Brake Safety Week puts attention on the parts of the braking system that most often lead to violations, reduced stopping performance, or out-of-service conditions. Inspectors are looking for problems that affect a commercial vehicle’s ability to brake safely and consistently under load.

- How to avoid operating equipment that should be repaired before returning to service.
Brake Safety Week may focus on brake systems, but overall compliance still matters. A clean inspection depends on the full condition of the truck and trailer, the quality of the driver’s inspection, and whether reported defects are handled the right way.
Our drivers are expected to report issues as they happen, not after the route is complete. If a brake problem shows up in the yard or on the road, the priority is to address it before it becomes a roadside violation, a service failure, or a safety problem for the customer’s load.
Pre-Trip Inspections Kept Small Problems From Becoming Big Ones
The pre-trip inspection is one of the most important compliance tools a heavy-haul operation has. It is also one of the easiest steps to rush when a customer is waiting, a rig is scheduled, or a jobsite needs equipment delivered without delay.
We do not treat the pre-trip as a quick walk-around for appearances. It is a working inspection of the truck, trailer, brake system, and required safety equipment.
Drivers checked items such as:
- Air pressure build-up and low-air warning function.
- Brake hoses, lines, chambers, and gladhand connections.
- Slack adjusters, pushrod travel, and visible adjustment issues.
- Brake drums, rotors, and lining condition where visible.
- ABS indicator lights and other dashboard warning indicators.
- Tires, wheels, rims, hubs, and lug areas.
- Steering and suspension components.
- Coupling devices and fifth-wheel connections.
- Lights, reflectors, and conspicuity markings.
- Required documentation and emergency equipment.

The yard crew and maintenance team played an important role in this process. A driver may be responsible for the final inspection, but brake compliance depends on good communication between operations, shop personnel, and the driver assigned to the equipment.
If something was questionable, it was addressed before departure. That might mean repairing an air leak, replacing a damaged hose, correcting an adjustment issue, addressing a warning light, or taking a truck or trailer out of service until the brake problem was fixed.
Stopping for a few minutes in the yard is better than stopping for hours on the shoulder, or having a truck placed out of service during a Brake Safety Week inspection.
We Built Checks Into the Trip
A brake inspection is not a one-time event. Heat, load weight, road conditions, stop frequency, and equipment wear can all change how a brake system performs after the truck leaves the yard.
Our drivers stayed alert for follow-up signs during the trip, especially after heavy braking, rough roads, jobsite access traffic, or changes in trailer weight and terrain. The goal was to catch performance issues early, while the truck was in a safe location and the correction could be handled before the problem became more serious.
